GLOSSARY
Bit - the smallest unit or number in a digital computer
Byte- eight bits, the smallest unit of data moved about in a computer.
Chips - the name for an integrated circuit. Chips are silicon wafers with circuits photo-etched into the silicon surface of layers.
DVD - Digital Video Disc or Digital Versatile Disc. A cd like disc that can store 4.7 Gb or more of information- several times more data than a CD-ROM. It can store an entire movie.
Gigabyte - (Gb) a unit of memory capacity. A single gigabytes 1,000 megabytes which is equivalent to almost 200 copies of the Bible.
Hard Drive - or Hard Disk - a computer's high speed storage device. It contains the operating system, the program and all created files.
Internet - millions of computers throughout the world linked together by telephone and cable lines. Computer users can communicate with each other and exchange information over the internet with a phone connection to their internet service provider.
Megabyte- (Mb) a unit of memory capacity. A single megabyte is 1,000 kilobytes, which is equivalent to a 400-page novel.
RAM - Random Access Memory. Memory chips used for the temporary storage of information such as the currently active file.
ROM - Read Only Memory - memory chips used by the computer for storing basic details about the computer.
