Types of Accessories - Peripherals

Keyboard

Your computer usually comes with its own keyboard when you buy it from the store, but if you find that it doesn’t suit you, you can always replace it with a more appropriate one.

One of the most important computer accessories, as most computer activities require inputting data, is the keyboard. There is a wide range of keyboards available, from affordable, PS-2 keyboards to the more sophisticated and expensive wireless and ergonomic types.

Ergonomic keyboards are best for people who do a lot of typing, as they minimize the chances of repetitive strain injury. For those whose workstations have very limited space, and want to get rid of the jungle of cables that come with owning a computer, wireless keyboards are the best choice.

Mouse

It is still possible to control your computer without the use of a mouse. But it will be very difficult, as most operating systems these days are designed to work with a mouse.

And because it is almost a necessity for computer users, computer mice come in a variety of designs. Types include the more affordable mouse with a ball underneath, and the wireless, optical kind.

Computers purchased usually come with their own mouse, but more often than not, it won’t suit your needs. Large computer stores that carry different types of mice will allow you to try out the different types available so you will know what type would go well with your computer lifestyle.

Printers

Printers, though not a necessity, is a helpful addition to any computer system. A printer will print out important documents, letters, cards, and even photos.

Scanners

A scanner lets you scan images and documents into your computer, so you can edit them, print them out, or send them to friends or colleagues. Scanners translate your document into a graphic image that you can edit. All scanned documents are converted to graphic images.

Types of scanners include the more common flat beds, which are thin, flat types with a flat screen to place your document or image on for scanning. Hand-held scanners are much smaller, and are used by rolling it on the document or image that you want scanned. Drum scanners, meanwhile, are used for scanning large documents. They also come in a range of prices and speeds, so it is best to evaluate your choices before purchasing one.

Speakers

Most computers come complete with their own sound cards, and for you to be able to hear sounds or play music from your computer, a good, reliable set of speakers is in order. Computer speakers are available in a variety of prices, sizes, and styles.

If you’re planning to watch DVD films or play games on your computer, then sophisticated speakers are recommended. But if you’re just a simple computer user, there’s no need to purchase high-quality speakers.

There are sound cards that allow Dolby, THX, and other theatre-quality audio, and there are specially-designed speakers that work well with these technologies.
